ENTERED THE PENINSULA WAR AT LISBON MARCH 1809. IN ACTION AT FUENTES D,0NOR, BADAJOZ AND SALAMANCA. DURING WELLINGTONS RETREAT FROM BURGOS IN THE ACTION AT VILLA MURIEL 25TH OCTOBER 1812 HE WAS CAPTURED BY THE FRENCH. HE WAS HELD AS PRISONER OF WAR UNTIL RELEASED 1814. HE FURTHER SERVED UNTIL 1818. DIED AT FENSTANTON JANUARY 1865.ORIGINAL LONG RIBBON . a large amount of research paperwork is with the medal.

VIC MGS, 2 BARS, VITTORIA, ST SEBASTIAN TO JOHN BELL 59TH FOOT. JOHN BELL WAS BORN AT WHITLEY CUMBRIA AROUND 1790 . HE ENLISTED INTO THE 59TH FOOT 1809. HE WAS IN ACTION AT VITTORIA AND WHILST AT THE STORMING OF ST SEBASTION 31ST AUGUST 1813 WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT LEG. CAUSING THE AMPUTATION AT THE RESULT. RECOVERED FROM WOUNDS AT CHELSEA HOSPITAL HE WAS DISCHARGED JANUARY 1816 ON ONE SHILLING PER DAY. HE DIED WHILST RESIDING IN THE WORKHOUSE AT BISHOPS WEARMOUTH SUNDERLAND.FEBUARY 1855. THE 59TH HAD 117 KILLED AND 20 WOUNDED AT ST SEBASTIAN. EX LAYLAND ROBINSON COLLECTION. A LARGE AND CONCISE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH IS WITH THE MEDAL.
