ALFRED WILLIAM HENRY SAWYER FIRST JOINED THE ROYAL AIR FORCE AS A RIGGER 1921. HE SERVED WITH THEM UNTIL HIS DISCHARGE IN 1939. ALMOST IMMEDIATLY HE VOLUNTEERED AND JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY AS ACT CPO AIR FITTER. HE SERVED ON VARIOUS SHIPS AND WAS ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER (VICTORIOUS ) WHEN AWARDED THE DSM FOR AUGUST 1942 DURING OPERATION PEDASTAL TO RE-SUPPLY MALTA. CITATAION READS FOR ZEAL , EFFICIENTCY AND NEVER -FAILING CHEERFULNESS IN CARRYING OUT REPAIRS TO AIRCRAFT ON DECK IN TRYING CICUMSTANCES, AND ESPECIALLY TO AN AIRCRAFT WHICH WAS BADLY DAMAGED AT 1300 AND WHICH FLEW AGAINST ENEMY AGAIN AT 1830 THAT DAY. A WRITE-UP OF THE OPERATION IS WITH THE COPY AND ORIGINAL PAPERWORK. BOTH RAF AND RN.

BY JUNE 1918 HAD BECOME AN ADMINISTRATIVE LIEUT. RESIGNED HIS COMMISSION DUE TO ILL HEALTH SEPTEMBER 1918. SERIOUSLY WOUNDED TWICE 1917. CONFIRMED PERSONALLY DESTROYED 6 ENEMY AIRCRAFT WITH RFC WITH THE DISTINCTION OF SHOOTING DOWN THE GERMAN ACE ALBERT DOSSENBACH. 3RD JULY 1917. MOSTLY FLEW WITH CAPT L MINOT AS PILOT. CITATION FOR MC READS FROM JULY 17TH 1917 UNTIL AUGUST 28TH 1917 ON WHICH DATE HE WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED ,THIS OFFICER CARRIED OUT EXCEPTIONALLY VALUABLE WORK IN THE TAKING OF AEROPLANE PHOTOGRAPHS AND ON RECONNAISSANCES FAR BEHIND THE ENEMY,S LINES. HE HAS TAKEN PART IN NUMEROUS COMBATS IN THE AIR AND HAS DESTROYED THREE HOSTILE MACHINES. HIS COURAGE HAS ALWAYS BEEN BEYOND PRAISE. HE WAS AWARDED A 1914-15 STAR WHICH IS NOT WITH THE GROUP. A VERY LARGE AMOUNT OF COPY RESEARCH , INC COMBAT WRITE -UPS, SQUADRON NOTES PICTURES OF HIM ETC ETC ARE WITH THE MEDALS, HE DIED OF INFLUENZA AND PNUEMONIA AGED 30YRS FEBUARY 1919.
